Sapporo is one of the snowiest large cities on earth. For nearly half the year its shrines and temples lie under white — this is a feature on that silence.
札幌の冬は長く、深い。多い年には一冬に累計6メートルものの雪が降り積もり、これほどの雪を戴きながら約200万人が暮らす都市は、世界でもまれです。十一月の終わりから翌年の三月まで、街も社寺も白の中に沈みます。
雪は参拝を遠ざけるものではありません。むしろ、雪を踏みしめて訪れる社殿には、夏とは別の静けさが宿ります。凍てた空気に鈴の音が澄みわたり、雪あかりが灯籠をやわらかく照らす——冬の参拝は、北の街ならではのご褒美です。
Sapporo winters are long and deep — heavy years bring some six metres of cumulative snowfall. Few cities of two million people carry so much snow. From late November to March, both city and shrines settle into white.
北国の初詣は、白い息と雪明かりのなかで迎えます。大晦日から元日にかけて、人々は雪道を歩いて社寺へ向かい、一年の無事を祈ります。北海道神宮をはじめ、市内各所の社は参拝の人で賑わい、篝火（かがりび）とあたたかい甘酒が冷えた体をほどきます。
足もとは根雪で固く、凍てついて滑りやすくなります。滑りにくい冬靴、あたたかな手袋、そして時間に余裕を——それが北の初詣の心得です。
In the north, the New Year's first visit (hatsumōde) is made through snow and frozen breath. Bonfires and warm amazake soften the cold as people walk the snowy paths to pray for the year ahead.

屋根に雪をのせた社殿や山門は、墨絵のような静けさ。朱の鳥居や灯籠が白に映え、夏とはまるで違う姿を見せてくれます。雪の重みで枝がしなる境内の木々も、冬ならではの景色です。

厳寒の札幌では、手水鉢の花がそのまま凍りつくことがあります。氷に閉じ込められた椿や南天は、冬にしか生まれない造形。雪あかりに透ける紅は、この季節だけの贈りものです。

雪を積んだ灯籠に灯がともると、境内はやわらかな陰影に包まれます。市内では冬の夜を灯りで彩る催しも各所で開かれ、社寺のしずけさと響きあいます。

滑りにくい冬靴と手袋、あたたかい服装を。参道は除雪されていても凍結します。日暮れが早いので昼の参拝がおすすめ。授与所の受付時間は冬期に短くなることもあります。
