水に浮かぶ、季節のうつろい。

神社やお寺の入口には、参拝の前に手と口を清めるための手水舎があります。その水をたたえる手水鉢（ちょうずばち）に、色とりどりの花を浮かべたものが花手水（はなちょうず）。もともとは草花の露で身を清めた古い作法に名を借りたもので、近年は、訪れる人の心をなごませる季節のしつらえとして各地の社寺に広がりました。

とりわけ柄杓（ひしゃく）を共用しづらくなった時期に、水盤を花で満たす社寺が全国で増え、SNSを通じて一気に親しまれるようになりました。あじさい、椿、菊、紅葉、そして雪の下でほころぶ花——四季のうつろいがそのまま水鏡に映し出されます。

Hanachōzu means "flower purification water." The chōzuya at a shrine or temple entrance holds water for cleansing one's hands and mouth before prayer. Filling that basin with seasonal blossoms turns a small ritual into a moment of quiet beauty — a practice that spread widely across Japan in recent years.

花を愛でる前に、手を清める。

花手水は「見て楽しむ」しつらえですが、水盤は本来、心身を清める場所。花には触れず、静かに愛でるのが作法です。
The basin is for purification — enjoy the flowers with your eyes, not your hands.

右手で柄杓（または備え付けの水）を取り、まず左手を清めます。／ Rinse the left hand first.

持ちかえて右手を清めます。／ Then the right hand.

左の手のひらに水を受け、口をすすぎます（柄杓に直接口をつけない）。／ Rinse the mouth from the left palm.

もう一度左手を清め、柄杓を立てて柄を洗い流し、元へ戻します。／ Cleanse the left hand again and rinse the handle.

花手水では花に触れない・水を乱さない。写真は他の参拝者に配慮して。／ Don't touch the flowers; be mindful of others when taking photos.
